In 1686, a breath of fresh air blew through the farming town: More than 1000 French religious refugees, fleeing religious persecution in their homeland, found a new home here. Margrave Christian Ernst had the baroque ideal city "Christian Erlang" built for them, guaranteeing them the freedom to practice their religion and economic privileges. In return, the refugees boosted the economy with their artisan skills. The special flair that permeated Erlangen at that time continues to characterize the city to this day.
