The company's origins date back to 1617 and Vierzigmannstraße. At the time of the Thirty Years' War, beer was already being brewed at Hauptstraße 116, where this authentic craftsmanship is still extensively practiced today according to ancient traditions. Erlangen's first "Imperial Post Office" was also housed in this building, which borders the medieval city wall, from 1653 onward. Among other things, this certainly ensured a steady flow of customers at this address.
When Carl Steinbach acquired this brewery in 1861, Erlangen had long been the leading beer exporter, ahead of Kulmbach, Nuremberg, and Munich. His descendants, the fifth generation, continued the old brewery tradition with master brewer Christoph Gewalt and opened the pub brewery in 1995.
It's the brewery's own malt that provides the best possible conditions for brewing a good beer. The use of numerous specialty malts makes it possible to brew a variety of beer specialties. Following traditional recipes and customs, combined with the best technology available today, we can thus offer a high-quality unfiltered beer.
At Steinbach Bräu, it's the beautiful historic buildings and interiors that ensure a visit is an unforgettable experience. Enjoying local beer specialties in a unique setting – that's not just something for Franconians to enjoy.
