The company's origins date back to 1617 and Vierzigmannstraße. At the time of the Thirty Years' War, beer was already being brewed at Hauptstraße 116, where this authentic craftsmanship is still extensively practiced today according to ancient traditions. Erlangen's first "Imperial Post Office" was also housed in this building, which borders the medieval city wall, from 1653 onward. Among other things, this certainly ensured a steady flow of customers at this address.
When Carl Steinbach acquired this brewery in 1861, Erlangen had long been the leading beer exporter, ahead of Kulmbach, Nuremberg, and Munich. His descendants, the fifth generation, continued the old brewery tradition with master brewer Christoph Gewalt and opened the pub brewery in 1995.

It's the brewery's own malt that provides the best possible conditions for brewing a good beer. The use of numerous specialty malts makes it possible to brew a variety of beer specialties. Following traditional recipes and customs, combined with the best technology available today, we can thus offer a high-quality unfiltered beer.

At Steinbach Bräu, it's the beautiful historic buildings and rooms that ensure a visit becomes an unforgettable experience. Enjoying local beer specialties in a unique setting – that's sure to delight anyone, not just Franconians!

Christoph Gewalt - Steinbach Bräu

How did you get into brewing beer?

Our family has been active as a brewery and malthouse in Erlangen for five generations (since 5). During my apprenticeship and studies, the idea of reviving the brewery came up, as we no longer had a brewery from 1861 to 1923 and had focused on malt production.

What is your connection to Erlangen?

I was born and raised in Erlangen and, through my family's history, I have a strong connection to the beer city of Erlangen.

Thanks to the university and Siemens, Erlangen is a very open and colorful city with a high quality of life.

How long have you been running your brewery?

Immediately after my studies in Weihenstephan, I started the pub brewery in 1995.

What is special about your beers and what types do you have on tap?

We always make a changing selection of beer specialties. Unfiltered and handcrafted.

We always have our Storchenbier on tap (in honor of our storks on the brewery roof). In addition, we have a variety of beers on tap every 2-3 weeks: e.g., our Goldblondchen/wheat beer, the Scotty with whiskey malt, our Bergkirchweihbier/festival beer, Hopferla/with green hops...and much more.
