As early as the 1950s, Middle Franconia had established a stronghold in large-field handball. Active, successful athletes from Erlangen contributed significantly to this fame. In 2001, the two handball departments, CSG and HG Erlangen, merged to form HC Erlangen.
Since 2018, HC veteran Tobias Wannenmacher and sports and fitness salesman Johannes Heufelder have been managing the club as full-time directors. A-license holder Tom Hankel specifically caters to the needs of goalkeepers in all elite teams, from the C-youth level to the Bundesliga.
For younger athletes—from juniors to juniors—the first priority is to awaken interest in and enthusiasm for handball. Accordingly, the focus is on the playing experience, and the children should gain as many different movement experiences as possible—including in other sports.
The HC youth development concept: The basic prerequisite for competitive sports-oriented development is playing in the highest leagues for each age group. Ensuring this year after year is also a hallmark of the club's continuous and, above all, sustainable youth development. The training schedule plays a key role in this. Starting at the C youth level, training takes place three to four times a week, although a session in another sport is also possible. Starting at the B youth level, daily training is required, with varying content such as tactics, technique, and athleticism. The A youth level represents the pinnacle of youth development, training six to seven times a week. The club also maintains partnerships with two schools.
As far as the promotion of top talent is concerned, cooperations with other clubs and Bavarian second division teams are planned for the future.
