Cycling in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region

Rolling hills of southern Franconian Switzerland, idyllic half-timbered houses, endless pine forests… on the tour through the metropolitan region, you flank Nuremberg and pass through historic towns nestled in idyllic landscapes. Yet, even here, you can still sense the distinctive character of the Franconian capital.

From the starting point at the tourist information office, you leave the Huguenot town to the east, where behind Buckenhof you will find one of the green lungs Erlangen awaits. Now the path leads largely through sparse forests. Kalcreuth begins a climb lined with fruit trees and the “Kalchreuth Cherry GardenAt the right time of year, the fruits of the trees are tempting. The effort is rewarded. At the entrance to the village, a panoramic view into Franconian Switzerland, which now accompanies the cyclist on the left. The route continues through pristine villages, where half-timbered houses and lovingly designed gardens leave a lasting impression. In Tauchersreuth, a 1907 water tower above a vantage point that offers a view as far as Nuremberg. Steadily downhill, with short breaks, the path now leads to Lauf an der Pegnitz. There you cross the old City gate and enter the spacious, historic market square. Anyone looking for a break will surely find the perfect refreshment here.
You now leave Lauf towards Nuremberg. After a few kilometers the pegnitz and accompanies you until just before the gates of Nuremberg. Historical ruins appear as if from nowhere. The Hammer industrial estate has been a listed monument since 1977 and invites you to explore. A short stop at the fairytale-like ruins of the moated castle Oberbürg. Shortly before Nuremberg, the route turns into the forest and then continues for just under an hour along forestry paths to Erlangen. Along the route, visitors can visit the Tennenlohe wild horses, the fallow deer enclosure, or the wild boar enclosure.
