Station 4 - Brauerei Hübner

1841-1923

The highly respected "Golden Swan" inn existed at Hauptstrasse 110 even before the Old Town fire of 1706. The then innkeeper and mayor, Johann Conrad Reck, rebuilt it a year later. Around 1841/46, a brewery was added to what had been dubbed the "Golden Lion." This quickly gained such prominence that its expansion in 1866 led to the closure of the business. In the 1870s, Conrad Hübner took over the brewery, whose beer became one of Erlangen's most popular in the following decade. After selling the brewing contingent to Brauhaus Nürnberg AG (1923), which operated its Erlangen depot here until the end of the 1950s, the Hübner family continued to run the malthouse in the rear buildings until 1970, when GEWOBAU subsequently built social housing on the site. The front building now houses the corner pub "Mein lieber Schwan."
