Station 15 - Brauerei Gebrüder Reif

1690-1906

In 1690, Isaac Buirette von Oehlefeld received permission to build a brewery in the new town. After two more generations and the admission of competitors (e.g., Kitzmann), the brewery was sold to Johann Georg Berthold in 1797. Under Zacharias Wolf, his widow's son-in-law, the name "Wolfsschlucht" became established after Berthold's death (1817).
While the conversion to a stock corporation (1863-1867) failed, Georg and Peter Reif brought the company into the top group of Erlangen breweries through extensive new acquisitions (steam engine in 1877, mechanical malt kiln in 1879), expansions (Burgbergkeller in 1884), and new buildings on a storage site on Schuhstraße, as well as a consistent export focus. In 1906, the company merged with the Helbig Brewery to form Henninger-Reifbräu. The premises were no longer needed and had to make way for the current old building of the university library.
