Before Johann Hartmann acquired the house in 1855, it had been home to an inn for 150 years. He initially closed it down and opened a brandy and spirit distillery instead.
Only the arrival of the Royal Bavarian 6th Infantry Battalion in Erlangen and the accommodation of 52 men in the municipal Redoutenhaus on Theaterstrasse prompted Hartmann to reopen the inn. Four years later, he built a brewing and cooling house in the backyard and began brewing his own beer. After his death in 1875, his son Andreas had a new beer cellar dug.
After the soldiers moved into the new barracks in 1877, the smallest of Erlangen's breweries had to close again in 1882. Andreas Hartmann sold the entire property, which today houses one of Erlangen's most popular pubs.
