Station 13 - Brauerei Henninger-Reif

before 1699-1974

The "flagship" of the Erlangen brewing industry was founded by Georg Vierzigmann before 1699 and passed to Johann Henninger several generations later (1816). In 1861, his son Heinrich Henninger (who gave his name to Frankfurt's Henninger Bräu) sold the company, which had flourished due to modernization and export orientation, to Wilhelm Helbig. Investments in modern brewing technology, land acquisitions, and the company's own railway wagons cemented the company's leading position among Erlangen export breweries. The two World Wars hit the corporation (established in 1904), which merged with the Reifbrauerei in 1906, particularly hard due to its export orientation. In the 1950s, the "Erlanger Reifbräu" managed to stabilize beer sales, and continued to produce its own lemonade until 1962. Part of Patrizier-Bräu AG since 1972, the business closed at the end of 1974. In 1975, the buildings (except for the façade on the main street) had to make way for the Altstadtmarkt shopping arcade.
