Station 12 - Brauerei Hertlein

1813-1890

After the building was constructed by Georg Fink in 1710, Johann Andreas Wirth first used the property as an inn from 1733 to 1779. He brewed his beer in the community brewery, and a cellar on the castle hill was available for storage. His successors continued this tradition, but it wasn't until 1813, when the community brewery closed, that Johann and Margareta Wernlein established their own brewery on their property.
Without a steam engine, the brewery's annual beer output was modest; Johann Holzberger, who had leased the business from Margareta Wernlein, managed 1857 hl in 495. During the heyday of Erlangen's breweries, Johann Hertlein, who sold the Ott brewery to acquire the business, and his son Friedrich managed between 1870 and 1000 hl in the 1300s. The brewery was forced to close in 1890, but the business continues to this day.
