The brewery complex, later called the “heart of the Erlangen brewing industry,” was founded in 1718 by the Windisch family.
After being acquired by Franz Erich in 1848, the company grew thanks to modernized facilities, becoming Erlangen's largest export brewery between 1869 and 74, and easily survived the subsequent period of declining exports. After the death of Martin Ernst Erich in 1905, the Toenishen family guided the company through the difficult 1920s. In 1930, the company was forced to file for bankruptcy, but the "Exportbrauerei Franz Erich GmbH" continued its history in 1931 under new owners, the City of Erlangen and Bamberger Mälzerei AG.
In 1940, the city withdrew as a shareholder, and from 1972, Erich Bräu belonged to Patrizier-Bräu AG Nuremberg, which closed the thoroughly healthy business with its beer and lemonade production in 1975. Today, the Dreycedern Social Center is located on the site behind the historic brewery walls.
