On the attics are ancient deities in the form of sandstone statues by the Bayreuth court sculptor Elias Räntz. On 12 September 1703, the palace acquired Margrave Christian Ernst and gave it to his third wife, Elisabeth Sophie. It burned down completely in the castle fire on 14 January 1814 and was only rebuilt in 1821–25 in a sober and functional manner for the university. Today, it houses the Administration of the Friedrich-Alexander University accommodated.

The palace was built between 1700 and 04 according to plans by Antonio della Porta and Jacques Bourdin de la Fond in the Baroque style, influenced by French classicism. Gottfried von Gedeler completed the construction. Together with the palace gardens, orangery, and Concordia Church, this was the first self-contained Baroque courtly building ensemble in Franconia.
