The private library of Margrave Friedrich of Bayreuth forms the original collection. Among them are numerous precious manuscripts, the Margravial Graphic Collection and MünzsammlungThe Old University Library was built in Art Nouveau style between 1910 and 1913. Together with the New University Library opposite, which was built between 1970 and 1974, there are around 5,4 million books.
