Handball has a long tradition in Erlangen. Teams such as the two Erlangen clubs TV48 and TB 88 were already playing at the top of Bavaria's leagues in the 50s and 60s. The spark for the club's successful career came in 2001, when the clubs CSG and HG Erlangen merged to form HC Erlangen. In 2014, the club was promoted to the first German professional league, which was repeated the following year after relegation in 2015. The boys from HC Erlangen are not a pleasant opponent and challenge the other teams of the "best league in the world“ face major challenges.
The HC Erlangen has its heart in the Huguenot city and since its first promotion to the 1st league, it has played its home games in the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung in Nuremberg which can accommodate up to 8.000 spectators. The Karl-Heinz-Hiersemann Hall in Erlangen is still the official training hall. But by choosing the Nuremberg Arena, one of the largest multi-purpose arenas in Germany, the HCE reaches fans from all over the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region.
